OVID-19 Need To Know – April 16, 2020
Yesterday, the Federal Government made an important announcement about the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), which we like to share with you.
As you likely know, CERB provides Canadians with temporary income if they aren’t working due to COVID-19. It provides $500 a week, for up to 16 weeks, to eligible workers.
Many of you have pointed out that this benefit penalizes essential service workers – and especially part-time workers – who continue to serve Canadians through the crisis. Yesterday, the government announced that a solution is coming, and that it will work with the provinces and territories to establish a temporary top-up to the salaries of essential workers making less than $2,500 a month. They also announced that eligible Canadians can earn up to $1,000 a month while receiving CERB payments.
We don’t have too many specifics at this stage. The government has promised more detail in the days ahead, but from what we have heard, we are hopeful that proposed solutions will go a long way towards addressing the issues you have raised around the CERB.
